A velocipede is a human-powered vehicle with two or more wheels designed for locomotion. It is considered to be one of the earliest forms of the bicycle, and is one of the oldest vehicles of its kind. Velocipedes came in various shapes and sizes, ranging from the small-wheeled scooter to the larger, more complex ones. Velocipedes were a popular means of personal transportation from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century. They were used for transportation of goods and people, as well as for leisure activities such as racing and pleasure rides. They were light and able to move quickly, and with the invention of the safety bicycle in the 1890s, they became even more popular. The design of velocipedes evolved as new technologies became available. They started off as wooden frames with large front wheels, but soon developed into metal frames with more maneuverable wheels. Hand brakes and multiple speeds were added, allowing for more control over the vehicle. Velocipedes remain popular among collectors and enthusiasts today, and can still be seen at vintage vehicle events.
