Throngs are a special type of gathering of people, usually for something important. The Oxford English Dictionary defines a throng as a “large crowd of people, usually assembled to watch or listen to someone, or to see an event”. A throng is noticeably different from a crowd in that everyone present will generally have a common purpose, creating a powerful atmosphere and an increased sense of anticipation. Whilst all types of throngs come with an air of excitement because of their size, some are particularly noteworthy and can leave a lasting impression. Political rallies, for example, often attract massive throngs as people come together in support of a political figure or cause. Sporting events too, draw in huge numbers of fans, creating an electric atmosphere as the teams charge onto the pitch or into the arena. As the crowd roars its approval or disapproval, they become one collective voice that, while composed of many individuals, is speaking with a single message. Music events such as concerts, festivals, and gigs, meanwhile, often draw the largest throngs of all. The thrill of seeing your favorite artist, together with the buzz provided by fellow attendees, means that these gatherings provide an unforgettable experience. Indeed, it is often the buzz and energy of a large, passionate throng that adds an extra special feel to such events, enabling us to truly embrace and appreciate the power of music and come together as one collective voice.
