Raccoons are perhaps one of the most recognizable and iconic mammals in North America. Although native to North and Central America, as well as parts of Asia, raccoons have become surprisingly adaptive, living in a variety of habitats from city sewers to dense forests. They possess the ability to remember solutions to tasks and solve complex problems, such as opening latched doors and manipulating objects. A raccoon’s dexterous front paws enable them to develop and explore new strategies to get what they want. These paws are also able to hold and manipulate food while they are eating. Lastly, raccoons are omnivores that eat a wide variety of food including insects, small mammals, worms, fungi and fruits. They even have the knack for preparing some of their food in strange but interesting ways. For example, when eating mussels and crabs, raccoons have been known to drop them from a height onto a stone in order to crack the shells and make their meal easier to eat. Raccoons can easily be recognized by their distinct black mask and bandit-like eyes. But behind this comical exterior, resides a wild animal that is intelligent, skilled, and adaptive.
