Ostriches are an incredibly unique and fascinating bird. With their distinctive long necks, feathered wings and two-toed feet, they are instantly recognizable as a species. Although they look like they can fly, they are actually the world’s largest living land birds and can’t fly at all. Their inability to fly, however, doesn't mean they can’t move quickly. Ostriches are some of the fastest runners on the planet and can reach speeds of up to 40 miles per hour! This is a great defense against predators, as they can easily outrun them. Along with their speed, they can also defend themselves with a powerful kick. In addition to their amazing speed and strength, ostriches have special adaptations that let them thrive in harsh environments, from deserts to snow-covered regions. They can go days without water and are able to regulate their own body temperature to maintain their metabolism. When it gets too hot, they lay out flat to reduce heat and use their wings to cool off their bodies. All in all, ostriches are a truly incredible species. They are very well adapted to their environment and possess amazing features to help them survive. They are a reminder of the beauty and power of nature.
