Hepatitides are a group of viral diseases affecting the liver that have been of great interest to health professionals and the general public alike. These diseases, which include hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E, are known to cause inflammation of the liver that can lead to a variety of health problems. Over time, the severity and complexity of these diseases have increased, resulting in more serious complications such as chronic infections, cirrhosis, and even liver cancer. Hepatitis A and B are the most common of the hepatitides, and the majority of cases are caused by the consumption of contaminated food or water. The two viruses can also be spread through sexual contact, but this is relatively rare. In recent years, a highly successful vaccine has been developed for both hepatitis A and B, which has had great success in preventing infections both in vaccinated individuals and in the wider population. In contrast, hepatitis C has been much harder to contain, as the virus is spread primarily through the sharing of needles or other equipment used for intravenous drug injection. Treatment for hepatitis C involves a long-term course of antiviral medications which can be ineffective in some cases. It is, therefore, important that public health efforts continue to focus on the prevention of hepatitis C, as well as advocating for safe injection practices and needle exchange programs.
