Comrades is one of the world’s oldest and most iconic long-distance running races, having been around since 1921 when it was first held in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa.
Each year it is the world’s largest ultra-marathon, attracting thousands of runners from all around the world who aim to conquer the 86.6 km (about 54 miles) of magical South African countryside that stands between Durban and Pietermaritzburg. It is a crowded and highly competitive race, so much so that some even refer to it as “the world’s greatest human race”.
The Comrades Marathon has its own culture, which is centered around the idea of camaraderie and helping others finish their journey. This spirit is encapsulated by the “Comrades Hug”, which is an embrace between two runners upon finishing, in recognition of the accomplishment and journey shared. The event also benefits from numerous volunteers who offer their help along the way, from providing water and food, to helping out with medical care, to simply offering moral support. Its identity as a rare and special event, coupled with its unique spirit of camaraderie, means that the Comrades Marathon stands out as something truly special.
