They were the world’s first type of mass-produced bicycle, and they forever changed the way people traveled. Boneshakers owe their name to their steel frame construction. Without the now-standard rubber tires, these early bicycles provided a jarring ride on cobblestoned streets. Consequently, the name "boneshaker" was bestowed upon these unfortunate early bike users.
